Serving on the ALGA Board of Directors is a fulfilling opportunity to contribute to ALGA and the local government auditing profession. Board officers and board members shape the policy and direction of the organization and the work of ALGA’s committees. Officers have additional duties, as outlined in the bylaws.

Have an idea for an engaging, innovative session for the highly anticipated 2026 ALGA Annual Conference in Cleveland? We’re looking for session ideas and conference presenters!

The Conference Committee is looking for session proposals and topics of interest for all conference sessions. The hybrid conference takes place May 3-6 and draws hundreds of attendees — both in person and online — from a range of specialties and a variety of organization sizes and types.

• We’re looking for options for all conference elements: concurrent sessions, roundtables, and pre- and post-conference workshops.
• We want a variety of session topics to cater to our diverse membership, and we are particularly interested in session topics such as audits related to extreme weather events, fraud, technical/advanced audit skills, ethics, AI, project management, and cost-savings/revenue-generating audits.
• We encourage you to partner with other audit shops as you develop presentations so we can share a wide range of ideas and approaches.
• Speakers must be present in person at our conference site in Cleveland, with sessions broadcast to our virtual audience.
• Volunteer to be a presenter and share your own professional expertise.

We will give first priority to session proposals received through Oct. 3. Additional proposals received through October 17 will also be considered on a space-available basis.

The ALGA Board of Directors has approved a new strategic plan to guide the organization through fiscal year 2026. The previous strategic plan was adopted in 2018, and ALGA has matured significantly since then in its operations, its aspirations, and the potential challenges ahead.

The new strategic plan focuses on three strategic initiatives: 

• Exploring the feasibility of a certification program to replace the Certified Government Audit Professional (CGAP).

• Improving diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) data collection.

• Developing a communication strategy.

How the new plan came to be – Strategic Plan Officer Stephanie Jackson and members of the Strategy Committee led the effort to create ALGA’s new strategic plan. In fall 2023, the committee worked with board members and committee chairs and also procured a consultant to facilitate a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis with board members and committee chairs during the fall 2023 board meeting.

After several meetings to refine our efforts, the Strategy Committee identified key areas for the organization to focus on for the next couple of years.

Why the plan matters – It is important for board members and other volunteers to ensure they keep focus on how best to use ALGA’s limited resources on issues and areas that ALGA considers to be most responsive to the needs of our members and consistent with the values of our organization.

About the Strategy Committee – Since 2022, the Strategy Committee has been working with committee chairs to refine and streamline their committees’ performance metrics. The committee will periodically report to the board on the organization’s progress in meeting the new strategic initiatives. The committee will also continue working with committees to refine performance metrics as activities and responsibilities evolve.

Join your fellow auditors for an informal kickoff to the ALGA conference featuring a little Seattle sightseeing and a lot of loud cheering. With the cost of putting on a conference increasing with the times, we’ve adjusted our registration rates this year to further prioritize member benefits and ensure equity and fairness for our attendees. Valuable early-bird savings are now exclusively available to members — and for the first time, registration fees vary between in-person and virtual attendees.

We’re also capping in-person attendance to maximize the comfort of your on-site experience at the conference venue. If you’re coming in person, we encourage you to register early so you don’t miss out!

We continue to innovate with ways to enhance your conference experience. For the first time, all attendees will have access to recorded sessions that they can view for a limited time after the conference. Knighton Nominations Are Now Open!

The Awards Program Committee is now accepting submissions for the annual Knighton Awards — which recognize the best local government audit reports among our member shops.

No matter your shop size or audit topic, we encourage all eligible member organizations to submit their best report from 2023. All entries will receive specific, actionable feedback for continuous improvement.

NEW THIS YEAR

ALGA is moving away from how we have done elections in the past. Our members decided that beginning in 2024:

• Members will choose among all eligible candidates for board positions through popular elections.
• If more than two candidates are running for the same seat, members will rank eligible candidates in order of preference to decide elections using the ranked-choice method.

Additionally, the current board approved updates to clarify the minimum eligibility criteria for all nominees for board officers and at-large member positions. These changes are meant to ensure our criteria for eligibility of board positions are clear and inclusive.

HOW TO NOMINATE

• Members interested in serving on the ALGA Board of Directors must fill out the Nominee Qualifications Form no later than 11:59 p.m. PT, Dec. 15, 2023. 
• You may also nominate a fellow member to apply for election by completing this optional nomination form. 

Note: Nominations of another member serve only as words of encouragement and will not be considered by the Nominating Committee in determining a nominee’s eligibility.

All prospective officers and board members must complete the Nominee Qualifications Form for their nomination to be complete.

The inaugural Rising Star Award* will recognize the best and brightest among newer local government audit professionals and encourage others to strive for excellence early in their audit careers.

This new award will honor up to three ALGA members who are considered “rising stars” in the local government auditing profession — specifically those who have no more than five cumulative years’ experience in local government auditing and who have made significant individual contributions that further the mission of the profession.

The nominations period opened Oct. 2, 2023, and closes on Jan. 5, 2024.

Only a chief audit executive may submit a nomination — and they may nominate only one staff member in their organization per year.

Award recipients will be recognized at the ALGA Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington, in May 2024.
