ALGA LISTENS: WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR

PRIORITIZING OUR VALUED MEMBERS

The ALGA Board of Directors is committed to keeping the cost of conference attendance reasonable while maintaining the quality experience our members expect.

With the cost of putting on a conference increasing with the times, we’ve adjusted
our registration rates this year to further prioritize member benefits and ensure equity and fairness for our attendees. Valuable early-bird savings are now exclusively available to members — and for the first time, registration fees
vary between in-person and virtual attendees.

We’re also capping in-person attendance to maximize the comfort of your on-site experience at the conference venue. If you’re coming in person, we encourage you to register early so you don’t
    miss out!

ADDED VALUE THROUGH RECORDED SESSIONS

We continue to innovate with ways to enhance your conference experience. For the first time, all attendees will have access to recorded sessions that they can view for a limited time after the conference. This both enhances the value
for all attendees, while ensuring flexibility for virtual attendees across different time zones.

PICK YOUR SESSION PREFERENCES IN ADVANCE

As you did with prior in-person conferences, we’re asking you to choose your preferred concurrent sessions when you register. This helps us plan accordingly; you can change your mind later!

Note: Roundtable sessions and some
workshops are accessible only to in-person attendees. Browse the registration brochure for full details on which sessions will be available virtually.

Fall 2023 President's Message

A Message from ALGA's President

It’s fall, y’all!
For those who experience seasons where you live and work, I hope there is a crisp feel to the air and orange leaves on the ground. While it may be 85 degrees in my Southern California backyard, the smell and taste of pumpkin spice and Oktoberfest is everywhere.
With this new season, I wanted to fill you all in on the many things happening with your ALGA Board of Directors and committees over the summer and into the fall. We’ve been busy meeting the mandates of our members and more!

Popular
Elections and Ranked-Choice Voting Go Into Effect

Back in May, the membership voted to approve a new nominations and elections process, which goes into effect this fall with our upcoming elections cycle. This means members will now directly
elect nominees for vacant board positions in 2024. Additionally, when more than two nominees run for the same seat, members will rank their preferred candidates so voting can be tallied using the ranked-choice method.

Based on member feedback,
the board adopted a policy that outlines expectations for candidates’ conduct during the nominations and elections period to maintain a collegial and collaborative approach to governance in ALGA.

Stay tuned for more info: Nominations for the
2024 elections open soon! We will be electing a new strategic planning officer, secretary, president-elect, and two at-large board members. Email President-Elect and Nominating Committee Chair Ross Visscher with your interest and questions.

In
the meantime, get to know your current board officers and at-large members here.

Awards Season Is Coming

The Awards Program Committee recently launched the new Rising Star Award. This will be ALGA’s first opportunity to recognize
the best and brightest among newer local government audit professionals and encourage others to strive for excellence early in their audit careers.

The nominations period will close Jan. 5, 2024. Nominations must come from the chief audit executive
(or equivalent) of your organization. Only one nominee per organization is accepted.

In addition to a rising star, consider nominating experienced ALGA members who are ready for the next chapter in their professional lives. They may deserve
recognition with our Lifetime Achievement Award.

Coming Soon: Our First Virtual Seminar

Your Education Committee is planning a new end-of-the-year Virtual Seminar to offer more opportunities for our members to meet their CPE needs before key year-end reporting deadlines. More info to come in early November — but in the meantime,
don’t slack on signing up for upcoming webinars and regional trainings!

On the Horizon: The 2024 Annual Conference Will Celebrate Sound Auditing

What’s that Puget Sound you hear? It’s the planning of ALGA’s annual conference that
takes place May 5-8, 2024, in Seattle. The Conference Committee has been diligently planning offerings to serve both in-person and remote attendees. Send in your speaker proposals and session suggestions to the committee by Nov. 4.

Like everything
in life, the cost to put on a conference has risen, and this will be reflected in a noticeable higher cost to attend in person than last year. The board is committed to using available resources to keep the cost of attendance reasonable while maintaining
the quality experience our members expect.

I personally am grateful to this year’s conference co-chairs and subcommittees for finding new and creative ways to bring an amazing, cost-effective educational experience in the Emerald City and online.

Changes Expected to Red Book and Yellow Book Standards

Your Professional Issues Committee, Peer Review Committee, and ALGA’s liaisons to the GAO and GASAC have been very busy this year keeping up with big changes to Red Book and Yellow
Book standards. ALGA is fortunate to have a seat at the table to ensure our voice as local government auditors is heard by these standards-setting bodies.

On behalf of ALGA, the Professional Issues Committee has formally commented on initial
exposure drafts released by the IIA and GAO, and committee members will continue to monitor updates to these drafts as they’re released. Be on the lookout for news from us in the coming year on expected timelines for implementation and resources to help
with adapting to new or changing standards.

There is even more going on with our committee into next year — I hope to update you with more exciting updates and announcements in the winter.

Stay tuned to our website and LinkedIn to
stay updated on everything happening in the local government audit world, including forum posts with your peers and timely announcements. Please also consider joining us as a volunteer — explore opportunities here.

As always, thank you for
your continued membership and dedication to ALGA and the local government auditing profession.

Prost!

Rebecca Takahashi
2023-2024 ALGA President
