Black Lives Matter.
The extrajudicial killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black individuals are deplorable acts of racial injustice. The menacing and harassing act by Amy Cooper and others and vigilante acts by George Zimmerman and others must also be called out for their hostility and racist actions towards Black people. Living while Black has become a risk in the United States. We stand with our members who are grieving, who are angry, and who need guidance and support.
The Association of Local Government Auditors began its journey to drive diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the ALGA and the local government auditing profession in 2018. We will continue that journey by compiling resources for our members on auditing police accountability and transparency. We will also continue using the DEI Forum to offer articles, books, and other media resources to help ALGA members expand their understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
ALGA stands firm in the belief that transparency and accountability are essential to protect the public interest. Government auditors are critical to ensuring that our police and law enforcement agencies are effectively and equitably serving and protecting all communities.
We care about you, and we want to support you and your work in protecting and enhancing the public good.
Let these injustices be a reminder to us of the importance of our work, and let us continue to ask ourselves: When was the last time we audited for equity? How long until the next?
