Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in ALGA

Committee Objective and Vision

The objective of the DEI Committee is to promote a diverse, equitable, and inclusive Association. In September of 2018, the Board approved the DEI Committee’s vision statement:

ALGA recognizes and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as inherent parts of its culture that contribute to its organizational strength.

The DEI Committee held its first meeting in April 2018 and one of its first goals was to define Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. At the September 2018 Board meeting, the Board approved the following definitions: 

Diversity: The condition that represents ALGA through different elements, which include, but are not limited to type of organization, region and shop size, age, experience, race/ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability. 

Equity: A proactive approach to improve outcomes for all, free from historical bias or favoritism that recognizes structural differences and burdens.  

Inclusion: Embracing diversity and welcoming all through extended access and opportunities.

DEI Committee Responsibilities and Accomplishments

The DEI Committee’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing, maintaining, and periodically reassess an association-wide non-discrimination policy, a DEI strategic work plan, and goals for board approval that will drive positive DEI outcomes across ALGA.
  • Designing and implementing a methodology to create baseline ALGA membership diversity data against which to measure progress while protecting members’ privacy.
  • Developing and monitoring DEI performance measures.
  • Working with committees to fill positions and speaker opportunities with members that enhance or meet diversity equity and inclusion goals.
  • Supporting the ALGA board and ALGA committees in understanding and furthering DEI goals related to their responsibilities.
  • Providing education on DEI issues to ALGA members.
  • Submitting written committee status reports for each board meeting and an oral report at the annual meeting.

Since DEI Committee inception in April 2018 we have made significant progress towards our vision. Significant accomplishments include: 

  1. The development of ALGA’s Non-Discrimination Policy, which the Board approved in September 2018.
  2. Held a DEI Committee retreat and developed a multi-year strategic work plan with specific activities to advance DEI.
  3. Participated in the development of ALGA’s draft new strategic plan, mission and vision, which now include the advancement of DEI in ALGA.
  4. Worked with ALGA committees on two surveys to help ensure conference speakers and ALGA leadership reflect ALGA’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  5. Collaboration with the Education Committee to identify diverse/new speakers for webinars.
  6. Worked towards a more inclusive ALGA Conference: ALGA will offer conference participants with pronoun stickers and neutral bathrooms.
  7. Developed DEI Committee performance metrics.
  8. Developed a plan to have a DEI committee member serve as a DEI liaison and resource on DEI issues to each ALGA committee.
  9. Established a forum on ALGA’s website to discuss and explore DEI topics.
  10. Created a DEI communications plan.
